All mandatory taxes and fees will now be included in flight advertised prices.
| | | | BookingBuddy Traveler, Starting today, January 26, 2012, the Department of Transportation is requiring airlines and online travel agencies to include all mandatory taxes and fees when advertising fares. This is a big win for travelers. We wanted to alert you to this as it will make flights and vacation packages appear more expensive than you may be used to. In reality, you are simply seeing more of the taxes and fees up front. Base prices themselves are not increasing, and the taxes and fees are the same. What does this mean? The biggest changes are: | - Seeing more of the cost of your flight/vacation package up front helps you compare
| | Fares will appear to be $20–$higher while you are searching for domestic travel, but you shouldn’t see that surprise bump from taxes and fees before you book | - Airlines have to create a page for all ancillary fees —including baggage fees
| | Some airlines were scattering these fees throughout their sites, making it hard for travelers to know what other charges the airline could add to their bookings. Though still not included in the base fare, these fees now appear on one page on all airlines’ sites. Here are a few for your convenience: | | American Allegiant Delta JetBlue Spirit Southwest United US Airways | In the end, the goal of this rule is to increase transparency in the airline industry so travelers are more aware of the real, total cost of their trips.
